A Father/Son Adventure in West Virginia

Quick Overview

As an older dad of a typical teen age boy I wanted an experience that would take the electronics out of our life and put nature back in. A getaway that my son Chance and I could experience challenges excitement that would make lasting memories.  Adventures on the Gorge with its opportunities of Zip lining and White Water rafting seemed to fit the bill exactly.

Located in the mountains of West Virginia; the view of the New River Gorge Bridge from the pool and Smokey's Steakhouse was just majestic. Lodgings diverse enough for all sorts of budgets were all clean and well maintained. People using the camping areas and bunk houses were all smiles and for us we wanted more of a Home feel, we were in a 2 Bedroom Outback Cabin which was nice enough to be a house! Chance loved that he had his own bedroom upstairs, and I was so happy with a kitchen and a washer and dryer in the cabin. This was all luxury, and we felt right at home.

Our first day was spent white water rafting on the Lower New River going through some class 3 and class 5 rapids. I have had friends tell tales of guides scaring them so much how dangerous the river can be, but Adventures on the Gorge has created a great training and culture with their guides to make this a family trip that everyone will enjoy. The excitement and the thrills were there, but we felt confident and empowered with what we needed to do that it made it fun and exciting. One of biggest surprises to me was that you can have a video taken of your experience that is professional and just AWESOME to have to keep as a reminder of the trip.

Zip lining and a tree top ropes course were spectacular as well. Challenging and safe, and perfectly the connection with nature that I hoped it would be. We also did a special tour of the cat walk under the New River Gorge Bridge which gives a unique view of the river below and how much of an engineering marvel that bridge really is. White Water rafting was the highlight for Chance I think, even though at dinner at Chett's Pub, he was falling asleep during the dinner from all the fun in the sun and water, for me it was the promise fulfilled of a reconnection. Experiences that will always be with us; experiences that are positive and bonding.
