We travel for many reasons - to experience, enjoy, and learn about other cultures and ways of life. Doubtless, Italy is at the top of many lists. Dreamy photos and Hollywood’s romantic images perpetuate the stereotypes.
For those and many other reasons, I feel that it’s important to prepare you for the real and authentic Italy. And, the real and authentic Italy will never disappoint!
This is the third in a four-part series of Italy Travel TipZ excerpted from my book…
Whether it’s on foot, riding the trains, grabbing a taxi or driving, you will have to get around… and getting around in Italy has its own rules!
In general - forget rules and queues!
Get and use a really good map and directions.
Always carry the Name/address/contact info of your accommodation.
Be prepared to walk a LOT!
Pay attention and watch your step… uneven pavement and cobblestones can be perilous.
Do not flag down taxis - go to an authorized taxi stand.
Train travel: Learn “train jargon” and protocol and how to read the arrival/departure board.
Driving? Again, forget the rules at home.
Always lock your car and stash your belongings in the trunk.
Seeing Italy’s Sites
Italy has more UNESCO than any other country - it is culturally rich but the reality is you simply cannot see and do it all…
Don’t over schedule yourself!
Yes, popular cities and sites will be crowded.
Invest in passes and local tour guides.
Museums/major sites may be closed on Mondays/holidays. Check to avoid disappointment.
Observe and respect local rules and restrictions - please!
Budget for splurges.
