BIG SUR’S ESALEN OFFERS A MAGNIFICENT SETTING FOR A WELLNESS RETREAT!
By Jane Coloccia
It was only a few months ago in the middle of summer 2017, when many wellness fans breathed a collective sigh of relief as Highway One through the Big Sur was re-opened after having been closed for more than a year as a result of a mud slide in winter of 2017.

While a few upscale resorts were impacted, those of us who have a passion for wellness and spirituality retreats were quite saddened by the inability to easily access one of our favorite retreats: Esalen Institute.
The setting alone at Esalen is one that is quite magnificent — perched high atop the cliffs in Big Sur overlooking the Pacific Ocean. New accommodations and some upgrades a few years earlier have helped to modernize the retreat center, but the essence of this spot has remained true for more than 55 years.
Esalen is all about pioneering deep change in self and it offers a wide variety of programs for visitors to partake in. From radical healing, writing and mindfulness to tapping, yoga, bodywork, art, dance, and much more, there are a variety of ways to explore your own wellness, spirituality, and greater sense of self at Esalen.

The property also offers A Time To Reflect weekends where you can enjoy the facilities of the retreat center without having to register for a workshop.
In addition to the workshops, the grounds at Esalen inspire wellness. Find a quiet place to sit alone and meditate in nature. Look out at the wide expanse of the Pacific Ocean and relax. Have a massage overlooking the sea or just hang out in the baths and be. If nature were an elixir for wellness, Esalen has surely tapped into it.
The Esalen kitchen serves delicious, healthy meals daily, crafting each dish with mindfulness and care, featuring produce and herbs from the Esalen farm and garden. House-made bread for toast, preserves, nut butters, and fresh fruit are available all day and night long.
